What is IPL? How does the Livy device function?

Great question!

IPL stands for intense pulsed light. It functions similarly to laser hair removal but is much easier and safer to perform at home. Our IPL handsets emit wavelengths that target the pigment in the hair. As the light is absorbed, it converts to heat, which then destroys the cells responsible for hair growth. This process results in hair growing back slower and sparser, ultimately reducing hair growth permanently over time.

Is Livy IPL hair removal safe? Could it cause cancer?

IPL is a popular and well-researched option for safe and effective long-term hair removal. Our IPL handsets are FDA-cleared for safe at-home use and are also certified by FCC, CE, and RoHS.

Livy IPL hair removal does not cause cancer or other long-term complications associated with UV exposure. All UV rays are filtered to protect your skin.

Does using the Livy IPL handset hurt?

Not at all! Unlike other hair removal methods, IPL is almost pain-free—no painful moments, cuts, or pulling. Some people with sensitive skin may feel slight discomfort at higher settings, but using a lower intensity keeps the treatment soft and comfortable.

How long will it take to see results? Is Livy IPL hair removal permanent?

Most customers start noticing reduced hair growth after just 3-4 uses, with full results typically visible after 12 sessions.

Some users achieve completely smooth, hair-free skin after around 12 treatments and never need a razor again. Others may need occasional touch-ups afterward, which is perfectly normal! With the 10+ year lifespan you can do as many touch-ups as needed, for as long as you'd like.

As long as you follow the instructions, the Livy IPL handset will provide a permanent reduction in hair growth!

How often do I need to use my Livy IPL handset?

We recommend using your IPL handset once a week for 12 consecutive weeks. If you want quicker results, you can increase to twice a week.

After the first 12-week period, use your IPL handset once a month for three months, or as needed. After that, plan for occasional touch-ups as new hair growth appears, usually every 2-3 months.

How is the Livy IPL handset powered? Will it work in my country? Plug type?

Our handsets are dual voltage (110V~240V), making them compatible worldwide. Every Novi IPL handset includes a 12V power supply and the correct plug type for your country. For example, USA orders come with 2 straight prongs, while EU orders come with 2 round prongs.

How do I clean my Livy handset?

To clean your handset, first disconnect the device from the electricity supply. Then, wipe the device down with a clean, dry cloth and 70% alcohol. (Don’t use acetone or other abrasive fluids – they may damage your handset.) Then, use a dry cloth or paper towel to dry the device.

Never immerse your handset or any of its parts in water.

Do I need to shave before using IPL? What other hair removal methods can I use?

Don't get rid of your razors just yet! Shaving is an essential step to prepare your skin for IPL treatment. It reduces hair length enough to avoid burns but leaves the root intact under the skin for your IPL handset to target. Hair removal methods like waxing or tweezing remove the root entirely, which interferes with the IPL process. Using the 4D Shaver is a great option to prepare your skin for IPL treatment.

However, if the area you're treating is already smooth and hair-free, shaving isn't necessary.

For facial IPL treatments, we recommend dermaplaning beforehand.

What is the IPL lamp made of?

The flash lamp in our handset is a Xenon Quartz Raytube, equipped with a glass filter to filter out harmful UV rays.

IPL Safety Tips

At what age can I start IPL treatment?

Livy is designed for adult use only. It is not recommended for anyone under the age of 18.

Do I need to wear eye protection?

Nope! There’s no need to wear eye protection when using Livy handsets. While IPL emits bright flashes, each handset is equipped with a sensor that only allows it to flash when the window is pressed against your skin. However, we do recommend looking away from the light during flashes.

Is it safe to use Livy’s IPL handset while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Although there is no evidence suggesting that IPL negatively affects pregnant or breastfeeding women, to stay on the safe side, we do not recommend at-home IPL treatment during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Is it safe to do IPL over freckles or moles?

We do not recommend using IPL treatment over very dark freckles or moles, though light freckles are usually fine. If you're treating an area with dark freckles or moles, we suggest covering them with a white pencil before proceeding.

Is it safe to do IPL over tattoos?

We do not recommend using IPL treatment directly over tattoos, as it could cause painful burns. However, treating areas around the tattoo is perfectly fine.

Can I use the Livy IPL before or after tanning?

If you've recently tanned, we recommend waiting 2 weeks before using your livy IPL handset. If you're planning to tan after IPL treatment, wait at least 48 hours.

I have a skin condition – can I use the Livy IPL handset?

Do not use the Livy IPL handset if you have any of the following conditions:

- A known skin disorder.
- Skin diseases such as allergic dermatitis, eczema, etc.
- Photosensitive epilepsy or photosensitivity.
- Are menstruating, pregnant, or lactating.

Also, avoid treating areas that are very dark (refer to the skin tone chart), broken, scabbed, cancerous, hemangiomas, or any artificial, aesthetic, prosthetic, or plastic areas.

Where can I use my Livy?

You can use your handset on almost any body part, including armpits, legs, face, and bikini area. The only areas we don’t recommend using Livy are above the cheekbones and on the inner parts of the bikini area (labia, vagina, scrotum, anus, etc.).

How strong is Livy? What are the energy and wavelength outputs?

Livy is powerful enough to deliver long-term, permanent hair removal while being safe for at-home use.

It has an energy output of 1.6 J/cm² to 3.8 J/cm² and operates with wavelengths between 510NM and 1100NM.

Are there any recurring costs? How long will my Livy IPL handset last?

No recurring costs! Livy comes with 500,000 flashes, which will last you over 10 years if used as recommended. No replacements or refills are needed.

We offer FREE shipping to over 20 countries worldwide. If you're able to enter your address at checkout, we can ship to you! Plus, we'll ensure you receive the correct plug type for your country.

We aim to dispatch all orders within 1-2 business days, and every order comes with tracking information from dispatch to delivery.
